Bikram Sambat is a solar calendar. Each month starts at sankranti, when the sun enters a new rashi. This sets how many days the month has, from 29 to 32. The official yearly patro published in Nepal fixes these month lengths, and Katigate uses the same tables instead of a formula. This is why the AD date for a given BS date, such as Asoj 1, can move by a day from one year to the next.
When someone asks "aaja kati gate?", they want the day of the BS month, from 1 to 32. Bar is the weekday, from Aitabar (Sunday) to Sanibar (Saturday). Tithi is the lunar day. It follows its own cycle of about 29.5 days, so the same gate falls on a different tithi each year. Festivals such as Dashain and Tihar are set by tithi. Salaries, school terms and government deadlines are set by gate.
