Bikram Sambat is a solar calendar. Each month begins at sankranti, the moment the sun enters a new rashi, and that is what fixes how many days a month gets — anywhere from 29 to 32. The official yearly patro published in Nepal settles those lengths, and Katigate reads from the same tables rather than a formula. That is why the AD date for, say, Asoj 1 drifts by a day from one year to the next.
When someone asks aaja kati gate, they want the day of the BS month, 1 to 32. Bar is the weekday, from Aitabar (Sunday) to Sanibar (Saturday). Tithi is the lunar day, and it runs on its own cycle of about 29.5 days, so the same gate lands on a different tithi every year. Festivals like Dashain and Tihar follow the tithi; salaries, school terms and government deadlines follow the gate.

About 56 years and 8 months. From Baisakh 1 (mid-April) to the end of December the difference is 57 years; from January to mid-April it is 56. So 2026 AD overlaps both 2082 and 2083 BS. Write the month name, then the gate, then the year with the BS suffix, for example "Asoj 2, 2083 BS". Some forms want the numeric form, 2083-06-02. Both are read the same way. Add the AD date in brackets when the reader may not know the Nepali calendar.
