About these exchange rates
Where the rates come from
The rates on this page are the official exchange rates for the Nepali rupee, published each day. They are set once a day. Commercial banks, remittance companies and money changers in Nepal use them as the reference rate. The "as of" date above the table shows which day's rates you are seeing.
Buy rate vs sell rate
The buy rate is what a bank pays you in rupees when you sell foreign currency, for example when you change remittance dollars into NPR. The sell rate is what you pay when you buy foreign currency from a bank, for example dollars before a trip abroad. The sell rate is always a little higher. The difference is the bank's margin. Banks set their own counter rates close to these official rates, so expect small differences at the counter.
Reading the unit column
Most currencies are quoted for 1 unit, such as 1 US dollar or 1 euro. Some are quoted for more units. The Indian rupee is quoted per 100 (the fixed rate is NPR 1.60 per INR 1, so NPR 160 per INR 100). The Japanese yen and South Korean won are quoted per 10 or 100 units. Check the unit column before comparing rates. Otherwise the yen rate will look far too high.
Why the Indian rupee never moves
The Nepali rupee has been fixed (pegged) to the Indian rupee at NPR 1.60 per INR 1 since 1993. So the INR row never changes. The NPR rate of every other currency follows that currency's rate against the Indian rupee. For example, the US dollar rate here follows the USD–INR market rate multiplied by 1.60.
When rates update
The date above the table tells you which day's rates are available. Fetches are cached for up to 30 minutes, so a newly published rate may not appear immediately. Reload the page to check again. Confirm your bank or exchange provider's quoted rate before making a transaction.
Exchange rates: common questions
What is today's US dollar rate in Nepal?
On 31 Oct 2026, the official rate for 1 US dollar is Rs 151.63 buying and Rs 152.23 selling. Use the buy rate when changing dollars into rupees and the sell rate when buying dollars. Banks add a small margin to these rates at the counter.
Why is the Indian rupee rate shown per 100?
Because of the peg, INR 1 is exactly NPR 1.60. The official rate is shown per 100 units (NPR 160) to avoid decimals. Divide by 100 to get the rate for 1 Indian rupee.
Which rate applies to remittance money?
Remittance changes foreign currency into rupees, so the buy rate applies. Remittance companies often use their own rate, which can be a little different. Compare it with the official buy rate here to see how much margin they take.
Do these rates change during the day?
No. The official rate is published once a day and stays the same for the whole day. Money changers' market rates can change during the day, but the official rate stays fixed until the next day's rates come out.
Why does the table sometimes show yesterday's date?
New rates usually come out just after midnight Nepal time. Until they are loaded, or on a day when no rates are published, the table shows the latest published rates. Banks use the same rates on those days.
Can I convert an amount using these rates?
Yes. The currency converter on the homepage uses these official rates. Enter an amount in any listed currency and it converts through NPR, using the buy or sell rate as needed.
