About the holiday calendar

What this page shows

This is the full holiday and festival list for the current Bikram Sambat year — public holidays, festival days, and observances that are marked in the calendar but not days off. Each entry shows the BS date, the matching AD date and the weekday, and the filter lets you narrow the list to public holidays only. Switch the year to plan ahead or look something up from last year.

How Nepal's public holidays are decided

The Government of Nepal publishes the official holiday list before each fiscal year, and district administrations can add local ones. The weekly day off is Saturday — not Sunday as in most countries — so banks, government offices and most schools close on Saturdays year-round. A few holidays apply only to specific groups or regions; Lhosar days, for instance, are observed by particular communities, and the Tarai districts mark Chhath on a bigger scale than the hills.

Why festival dates change every year

Most Nepali festivals are fixed by the lunar calendar: a tithi (lunar day) in a particular month, not a number on the Gregorian calendar. Dashain's main day is Ashwin Shukla Dashami, Tihar's Laxmi Puja falls on Kartik Krishna Aunsi, Holi on Falgun Purnima. Because twelve lunar months run about 11 days shorter than the solar year, each festival drifts against the AD calendar and lands 10–12 days earlier one year, then jumps back after a leap month. The list on this page already carries the resolved date for the selected year, so you never have to do that math.

The festival year at a glance

The year's anchor is the autumn pair: Dashain, Nepal's longest holiday stretch, followed about two weeks later by Tihar's five days of lights. Spring brings Holi and Nepali New Year (Baisakh 1, mid-April). In between sit Maghe Sankranti in January, Teej — the women's fasting festival — in late monsoon, Buddha Jayanti on the full moon of Baisakh, and Chhath after Tihar. Constitution Day, Republic Day and Martyrs' Day are fixed civic holidays on the BS calendar.

What people use this list for

The practical questions this page answers: when to book buses and flights home for Dashain (fares climb weeks ahead), which days banks and government offices shut, how school exams and admissions fit around the festival block, and which long weekends are worth a trip. Employers use the public-holiday filter for leave planning; families abroad use the AD dates to time calls and visits.

Nepal holidays — common questions

How many public holidays does Nepal have in a year?

Usually around 35 or more national public holidays, plus every Saturday, plus holidays limited to certain groups or districts. The exact count changes each year with the government's published list — the public-holiday filter on this page shows the current year's set.

Is Saturday or Sunday the weekly holiday in Nepal?

Saturday. It is the only full weekly day off — offices, banks and schools run Sunday through Friday, with some offices working a shorter Friday.

When is Dashain this year?

Dashain sits in Ashwin–Kartik (late September to mid-October). The exact days for this year — from Ghatasthapana to Purnima, including the main Dashami tika day — are in the list above under the festival filter.

Why is a festival on a different date than last year?

Because it follows a lunar tithi, not a fixed calendar date. Twelve lunar months are about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so lunar festivals slide against both the BS and AD calendars and reset when a leap month is inserted.

Do all offices close on every holiday in this list?

No. Entries marked as public holidays close government offices and banks nationwide. Festival and observance entries without the holiday mark are calendar events — schools and private offices may or may not close, and some holidays apply only to specific communities or regions.
