This page lists all holidays and festivals for a Bikram Sambat year: public holidays, festival days, and days the patro marks that are not days off. The Government of Nepal publishes the official holiday list before each Bikram Sambat year starts. District administrations can add local holidays. Saturday is a weekly holiday. Government offices now also close on Sundays, while private workplaces may follow a different schedule. Confirm opening days before a visit. Some holidays are for a community or region only. For example, each Lhosar is for specific communities, and Chhath is celebrated much more widely in the Tarai districts than in the hills.
Most Nepali festivals fall on a set tithi in a lunar month, not on a fixed Gregorian date. Dashain's main day is Ashwin Shukla Dashami. Tihar's Laxmi Puja is Kartik Krishna Aunsi. Holi is Falgun Purnima. Twelve lunar months add up to about 354 days, while the solar year has 365. So a lunar festival comes 10 to 12 days earlier each year. About once every three years a leap month (adhik mas) is added, and the festival moves later again. The list shows the correct date for the year you select.
Most big festivals fall in autumn. Dashain lasts fifteen days, from Ghatasthapana to Purnima, and is the longest holiday period of the year for offices. Tihar's five days come about two weeks later, and Chhath comes a few days after Bhai Tika. In spring, Holi falls on the Falgun full moon, and Nepali New Year is on Baisakh 1 in mid-April. Other festivals include Maghe Sankranti on Magh 1, Buddha Jayanti on the Baisakh full moon, and Teej, the women's fasting festival, near the end of the monsoon. National days have fixed BS dates: Martyrs' Day on Magh 16, Republic Day on Jestha 15 and Constitution Day on Asoj 3.
People use this list to decide when to book a bus or flight home for Dashain, since fares go up weeks before. They check which days banks and government offices are closed, whether school exams clash with festival holidays, and which holidays fall next to a Saturday for a longer break. Government offices currently close on Saturday and Sunday. Private workplaces, shops and individual services can follow a different schedule. Confirm the opening days of the office you need; for older dates, use the schedule that applied then.
Dashain falls in Ashwin and often continues into Kartik, between late September and late October depending on the year. The exact days, from Ghatasthapana to Purnima with the Dashami tika day, are in the list above under the festival filter.
Because it follows a lunar tithi. Twelve lunar months are about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so lunar festivals move earlier in both the BS and AD calendars. They move later again when a leap month is added.
