What pasni is
Pasni, or annaprashan, is the first time a baby is fed solid food, usually a spoon of kheer offered by the oldest relatives in turn. It is held in the sixth month for a boy and the fifth for a girl, counted from the birth date in the Bikram Sambat calendar, and it is the one family ceremony almost everyone still holds on a sait day.
How the date is picked
The baby's age fixes the month, so the family looks for the sait nearest the right month rather than the best one in the year. Within that window a priest checks the child's birth nakshatra against the day's, avoids the tithis and weekdays the tradition rules out, and may also avoid the days close to a new moon. On the day
The ceremony is short: a ganesh puja, the feeding in order of seniority, gifts, and a meal. Pasni dates are spread across the whole year, a few in every month, because babies are born in every month; many families still book a hall, so a sait that lands on a Saturday fills early. If the ideal month has no sait at all, the ceremony moves to the next one rather than to an unlisted day.

Is pasni in the fifth or the sixth month?
Sixth month for a boy, fifth for a girl, by the common Nepali reckoning; some families use the sixth month for both. Count in BS months from the birth date.
Can the baby be fed rice before the pasni?
The ceremony marks the first grain, so families usually wait. Paediatric advice on when to start solids (around six months) lines up with the sixth-month timing.
What if no sait falls in the right month?
The pasni moves to the first sait of the following month. Families do not hold it on an unlisted day.
