The thread ceremony for boys. Dates are fewer than for weddings and concentrated in the spring months, and the family usually wants one that also suits the school calendar.
Bratabandha is the sacred-thread ceremony (upanayana) for boys in Bahun, Chhetri and several other communities, after which the boy wears the janai. It is a full-day ritual with the family priest, the guru and the whole extended family, so the date is chosen early.
Bratabandha dates are fewer than wedding dates and cluster in Magh, Falgun, Chaitra and Baisakh. Families often pick one that falls in a school break, since the boy is kept at home for the rituals on and around the day.
The published sait is a general list. The family priest usually checks the boy's birth chart against it before a date is fixed. Tap any date in the table to open it in the calendar with its tithi and events.
