Saturday is Nepal’s familiar weekly holiday, but the office week must be checked for the year and institution you need. Current 2083 government notices list Saturday and Sunday as weekly closures. Private businesses, schools and bank services can have their own operating arrangements. Check the specific office before travelling or counting a deadline.
Where the Saturday holiday comes from
Saturday is called Shanibar, a name associated with Shani in the traditional planetary week. Religious beliefs about Shani are one cultural explanation people give for the day’s significance. They do not, by themselves, establish when or why an administrative weekly holiday was adopted.
Accounts of the holiday’s origin often name different rulers or decisions. Without a dated administrative record, those stories should be treated as unconfirmed historical accounts. For practical planning, the applicable office notice matters more than an origin story.
Saturday is also a day of worship. Many people visit Shani and Hanuman temples on Saturday; Hanuman is believed to protect devotees from Saturn's harsh effects. Many households also keep a Saturday fast.
How the week runs
For decades Sunday was the first working day, government offices closed early on Friday afternoon, and Saturday was the only full holiday. Banks, courts, schools and government services were all shut on Saturday.
Weekend arrangements have changed over time. The current 2083 government holiday notice includes both Saturday and Sunday. Do not apply today’s schedule to an older date, or assume that every employer follows it. Confirm opening hours, local holidays and any later notice with the institution concerned.
What the Saturday holiday means in practice
- Banking: branch opening hours and digital payment processing are different questions. Ask your bank about the service, transfer cut-off and expected settlement date. A weekend closure does not mean every electronic transfer stops.
- Working with other countries: a Sunday–Friday office week and a Monday–Friday week overlap on Monday through Friday, five days. Compare the actual hours as well as the weekdays; an early Friday closing or a time-zone difference can reduce the time available for a meeting.
- Travel: Saturday is when people in Nepal go out. Temples, picnic spots, hiking trails and highway restaurants are busiest that day, so book ahead.
- Festivals: when a public holiday falls next to a Saturday, many people take a long weekend and bus tickets out of Kathmandu sell out early.

Saturday in the calendar system
BS and AD use the same seven-day weekday cycle. A single local civil date keeps its weekday when converted between these calendars. However, at the same instant it can already be Saturday in Kathmandu and still Friday in another time zone. The date converter changes calendar dates; it is not a world-time converter or proof that an office was open.
Checklist for the Nepali week
- Finish bank work before Friday afternoon.
- Book Saturday bus tickets early, especially before a festival.
- For government work, check the current office notice for working days, service hours and appointment requirements before travelling.
- Ask a private office or shop whether it opens on Sunday.
- Check whether the office you need follows the Sunday holiday started in April 2026.
